We here at Entertainment Zone are saddened to hear of the passing of actress Deanna Lund on June 22, 2018. Lund was best known to millions of scifi fans as Valeria Ames Scott, the rich society girl who, along with six other members of the suborbital flight The Spindrift, was stranded on a world filled with giants. The announcement of her passing was made on The Hollywood Show face book page and has since been confirmed by close friends. Deanna Lund, who was born on May 30, 1937 was 81 years old. Her death was due to misdiagnosed cancer.
Deanna Lund was specifically chosen by show creator Irwin Allen to play the role of the beautiful and headstrong, Valerie Scott in the series, which ran for two seasons. While working on the Land of the Giants, Lund met and fell in love with fellow co-star Don Matheson who played millionaire industrialist and hot tempered, Mark Wilson. The couple married shortly after the series ended and had a daughter, Michele Matheson. The two later divorced.
Land of the Giants was a physically demanding show for its stars, who had to climb ropes, run and do some very dangerous stunt work themselves. Deanna Lund, an active and athletic woman, easily kept up and made her character of Valerie Scott even more believable. She was a fan favorite and continued to have a strong fan-base from her work on Land of the Giants. She made frequent appearances at conventions much to the delight of those fans. Deanna also continued the adventures of her character by writing and releasing a novel in 1992 titled, Valerie in Giant Land, which was well received by fans of Land of the Giants and had recently been updated to include more material. All profits from the sale of the book are going to the American Cancer Society for research.
All of us who remember Deanna Lund from Land of the Giants will miss her. Deanna Lund was preceded in death by her Ex-husband, Don Matheson and is survived by her three children: her daughters Kim Lund, Michele Matheson, her son Randy Lund and her grandchildren.
R.I.P Deanna Lund.
